to me this tune is one of THE quintessential examples of what the band could do. The way they weave in and out of each other is nothing short of brilliance. Now mind you I'm mostly referring to 71 era. Once they dropped the GDTRFB combo I lose interest in the song ESPECIALLY those lame 80's versions. Sorry. Also, I NEVER did that damn clapping crap either, I detested it.

I agree on the clapping too, but like the 80s except for the predictable pairing.

The Dead's version seemed more cosmic than others I'd heard before but maybe it was just a later mood.

But not really, it's more like seeing that some silly love songs are not about people per se, like George Harrison's "Fish on the Sand." Or they may be about both a lover and God as in some gospel or soul songs.

But I never got that connection from a rock band except for the GD, esp when the spirit moved them. O - bold as X. (Pick your bridge or airport it seems.)
